Current Information:Age-22 Born-Battersea Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery, Belgium
On 17th March, 1915, the 3rd Worcestershire, of 7 Brigade, 3rd Division left their billets at Locre and moved into trenches east of Kemmel where they remained until 19th March. The battalion diary recorded very little of their time here so there is no information concerning the death of Alfred Dawkins who was killed on 17th March. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries. |
